“What’s the weather like today?”
How often do you ask this at the start of a day?
Do you always get it right? No.
Any big disasters follow? Rarely.
PROOF! We all face potential change and uncertainty every day, and we capably deal with it.
And then there’s business … where people are constantly tired of so much change – “Change Fatigue” being the universal catchcry.
Organisations are constantly changing … they have to in order to exist, survive or grow.
If you set a 12-month business plan and slavishly follow it, you won’t succeed because the world will change over the course of that year.
If you remain fixed on your priorities and refuse to shift them, you are in danger of losing the advantages of being nimble.
If day-to-day work remains unchanged, it may placate for a while – but energy will gradually be lost.
And, when something really big happens which demands a true shift, it will be a lot harder to rally.
So… what do you do?
The Change Checklist:
As a leader:
-
- Know your organisation’s short and long term priorities
- Know your key priorities
- Guide your people to stay aligned to these priorities, clearly communicating the ‘what’ and ‘why’ as you go
- Be aware of changes (both in the organisation and externally) that may alter these priorities
- Be ready to shift
- Embrace the open mindset …
The benefits:
- Those working with you will be better served by your efforts
- You will be clearer on your value and where you can best contribute
- Your people will always be engaged as they know they are contributing to the success of the business
- You will have a closer connection with what your people are actually doing
- You will be in a strong position to help guide the business and its leadership
And … your people will not be affected by ‘change fatigue’, as their ability to shift becomes part of their day-to-day.
