Put up your hand if you think we should pollute less to make the world a cleaner place!

Put up your hand if you think we should all do something meaningful to make an immediate difference!

OK – from this day on let’s all sell our cars and only use solar power at home!

Change. It’s easy to collectively agree on the need, harder to personalise the ramifications.
Big themes we globally hear around transformation include:

  • Deliver on existing business commitments while changing for a shifting economy
  • Reduce costs, work simpler and smarter
  • Always be adapting and open to new ideas
  • Work across the siloes
  • Help people be ok with constantly shifting roles
  • Structure the organisation differently to adjust to the constant emergence
  • Engage everyone differently and meaningfully, all the time
  • Bring everyone on the journey!

Now here’s the interesting part …

With the multiple transformations we are seeing around the world there is usually a basic rule of thumb:

  • Some people will genuinely embrace the on-going complexity and changes with huge energy
  • Some people will completely disagree and internally check out
  • And the rest will agree on the following logic
    • The world is changing
    • We have to adapt and be agile
    • We must lead, collaborate, be valued and engage differently

But they remain uncertain around how they are feeling and how they can change

  • ‘Do I really see the opportunity here?’
  • ‘What’s really in this for me?’
  • ‘Do I have an on-going part to play in this’
  • ‘Do I really believe in what’s happening’
  • ‘What can I actually do differently that keeps up with the shifting environment?’
  • ‘What change in behaviour can I role model for others?’
  • ‘What should I be embracing instead of quietly resisting’
  • ‘Do I really agree with this, or is there another way?’

These responses are human nature – and therefore there are no simple answers. There’s also so much which is out of people’s control that it fuels the uncertainty, which is not always the easiest feeling to live with.

TIPS:

  • Take the time out to stop and think about the change and what it means to you
    • Pros and cons
    • Is it aligned with your values?
      • Can you live with it?
      • What are your options / opportunities?
  • Plan and act on some simple facts that help you adjust
    • It’s hard at first but gets easier over time
    • Behaviours can shift mindset
    • Have a purpose, plan and be on the front foot
  • Make sure your normal KPIs are aligned, in some way, to the shifting organisation
  • Ensure you are always receiving as much clarity around the evolving situation that you can
  • Speak to others about what they are thinking and feeling
  • Help others through the process
    • They will be better off, and it might help you get clearer in the process!
